Which phone number goes in Merchant Center and on your site?

Put one business phone number in Merchant Center, verify it there, and show the same number in your site’s footer and on its contact page. Google’s fix page asks for the phone number to be identical in all three places, and its onboarding checklist asks for one that is active. So ring it yourself, today.

You run this check yourself

Our scanner can’t see inside your Google accounts, so this one’s on you. Work through the checklist below without running a scan.

Why this matters

Two Google pages ask for the same thing from opposite ends. The Business information page, for your Merchant Center settings, says: “Use your valid business contact number in the “Phone number” field.” The fix page for missing contact information says: “Also, add your business phone number on the Business information page in Merchant Center.” Its last step is four words long: “Verify your phone number.” And among the usual reasons for a Misrepresentation or Website needs improvement notice it lists this one: “Your website or Merchant Center account is missing a verified phone number, physical address, or email address.”

The same page wants the number to agree everywhere a shopper might look: “Ensure your business name, address, and phone number are identical in your website footer, contact page, and Merchant Center settings.” The usual way a store gets this wrong is time, not carelessness. The mobile you typed in when you opened the account, the landline the site shows now, the agency number from the launch: three real numbers, one business, and a shopper who can't tell which to ring.

Then the number has to work. Google's onboarding checklist, “Prepare your business and website for Merchant Center onboarding and reviews”, says: “Make sure the phone number is active and the email address is hosted on your store’s domain.” Product Experts on Google's Merchant Center Community list a phone number in every page footer and on the contact page, next to the business name, email and address. A line that rings out, fills up with voicemail or reaches someone who has never heard of your shop does more damage than a missing one. The detail on choosing and testing the line is in a usable business phone number and is your phone line reachable?.

StoreVerifier doesn't sign in to Merchant Center, so the Business info side is a manual check. On the store, the free scan flags a contact page with no phone number, and it compares the number in your structured data with the one in your footer. Whether the number is valid for its country is yours to check too. The rest of the contact checks are listed on the misrepresentation checker.

Typical evidence

Same number, same format, same surface

Compare the number in Merchant Center with the public contact page yourself. The scan can capture public text, but it does not retrieve account or profile data. Different digits deserve an explanation or a correction.

What it looks like once it is right

Business info: +44 113 496 0000, verified. The footer and contact page show +44 113 496 0000 with “Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm”, and the after-hours voicemail names the business and promises a reply the next working day.

Self-check steps

One canonical number, three surfaces

After the fix: one primary number entered identically in GMC, the website Contact page, and the Google Business Profile. Normalises to the same E.164 string in all three.

The E.164 normalisation means format does not matter — spaces and hyphens are stripped before comparison. But the underlying digits must be the same number.

Questions merchants ask

Should the number on my site be the same one as in Merchant Center?

Yes. Google's fix page for missing contact information says: “Ensure your business name, address, and phone number are identical in your website footer, contact page, and Merchant Center settings.” If you run separate lines, put the main one in Business information and on every page, and label the others by what they are for.

Can I use a mobile number for my business?

Google's Business information page asks for a valid business contact number; it doesn't say landline. What counts is that it is the business's number, that it is active, as the onboarding checklist puts it, and that it is the same in Merchant Center and on the site.

What if I have separate numbers for sales and support?

Show both, labelled, and choose one as the main number for Business info. Google's fix page asks for the phone number in the footer, the contact page and Merchant Center to be identical, so the Merchant Center number has to be one of those on the site.

Remediation

Risk signal

A phone number is the one contact detail a shopper can test in ten seconds, so a dead line says more than any policy page. One number, verified in Merchant Center, printed on the site, ringing. Then run the free scan and let it check the store side for you.
