Is your phone line reachable? Test it for Merchant Center

Call your published number from a phone it does not know, during your stated hours, and hear what a customer gets: a person, a clear voicemail, or nothing. Google's onboarding checklist asks you to make sure the phone number is active, and Merchant Center asks for a verified number. A call from your own phone settles it; no scan can.

You run this check yourself

Our scanner can’t see inside your Google accounts, so this one’s on you. Work through the checklist below without running a scan.

Why this matters

Google's onboarding checklist, under communication integrity, says: “Make sure the phone number is active and the email address is hosted on your store’s domain.” Business info asks for “your valid business contact number”, and the contact fix page ends with “Verify your phone number.” The Editorial and professional requirements count a Merchant Center account without “a verified phone number” as insufficient contact information. A number that never connects meets none of that in spirit, whatever it says on paper.

Product Experts on Google's Merchant Center Community list the phone number among the details every footer and contact page should show, and want the business reachable “during posted business hours”. If you keep a Business Profile, its guidelines say “The phone number must be under the direct control of the business.” and “Premium phone numbers are not acceptable regardless of the rate charged to the caller.” Its phone verification needs a person on the line, too: “Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems won’t get the code.”

Numbers die quietly. A provider switch, a landline cancelled after a move, a mobile that lives in a drawer: the site still shows the number and nobody notices until a customer does. The test takes a few minutes and no tools, which makes it the cheapest fix in this library. Publishing the number well is covered in the phone number guide; the hours you promise next to it, in service hours.

This is a manual check: StoreVerifier cannot place a call. The free scan flags a contact page with no phone number. Whether the number is complete and right for its country, and whether it rings, is up to you. The misrepresentation checker lists the contact checks.

Typical evidence

Would the published phone line work today?

A scan can confirm that a number is public, not that it is answered. Test the routing, voicemail and stated hours yourself before relying on the number as business contact evidence.

What it looks like once it is right

A test call at 10am reaches “Acme Home, this is Sam.” At 7pm a voicemail names the business, gives the hours from the contact page and promises a call back the next working day. The same number is verified in Merchant Center.

Common mistakes

Common mistake

The contact page lists 0113 496 0000. It rings out to a full voicemail box: the landline moved to a new provider and nobody set up the greeting.

Self-check steps

Would the line work today?

Test the number, routing, voicemail and published hours before you rely on it as contact evidence. A scanner can see the listing, not whether someone answers.

Questions merchants ask

Why does Merchant Center care whether my phone number works?

Google's onboarding checklist asks you to make sure the phone number is active, and Merchant Center asks for a valid, verified business number in Business info. A number that never connects is contact information customers cannot use.

Is voicemail acceptable for a business phone number?

Google's Merchant Center pages ask for an active, valid business number; they do not ask for a person on the line every minute. A voicemail that names the business, repeats your hours and gets returned keeps you reachable. A full or unset mailbox does not.

Can I use a phone menu (IVR) on my business line?

On the store, yes, as long as it leads to a person or a message. For verifying a Google Business Profile by phone, Google's page says IVR systems do not get the code, so a person has to answer that call.

Remediation

Risk signal

A dead number undoes a lot of careful work on the rest of the site, and it is the easiest thing on your list to test. Call it, fix what you hear, and scan the store to make sure the number on the page is the one you just called.
PriorityTreat this and any other highest-severity findings as first-priority work, then document each fix.
EvidenceRecord the current state before each change, apply the fix, then capture the corrected state so every change is evidenced.
