Product disapproval vs account suspension

A disapproval stops one product; a suspension stops every product in the account. Work out which one you have first: the fix and the review differ.

Why this matters

Google's “Issues in Merchant Center” page draws the line in two sentences. For products: “Product-level issues only affect individual products, not your entire account.” For the account: “Account-level issues impact all of your products in Merchant Center.” Everything else follows from which of the two you are looking at.

Product-level issues come in two strengths. “Disapproved products stop showing across Google”, while a product with a warning keeps showing with its performance possibly limited, and an unresolved warning can become a disapproval. The usual causes are on your own pages: Google's list includes “Use of placeholder content”, “Broken links” and “Inaccurate product descriptions”. One type deserves a special mention, because it hits many products at once: “Preemptive item disapproval (PID) occurs if the price or availability of your products don't match between your product data and website landing pages.” A review is required to clear it.

Account-level issues also start with a warning. You get an email and a warning period to fix things, and the Misrepresentation policy gives the window as “7 or 28 calendar days”. If the issues are still there when the period ends, the Issues page says “your account will be suspended and your products will be disabled from appearing across Google.” For the worst cases there is no warning: “In some cases when an egregious account-level issue is detected, no warning is given and the account is suspended immediately.”

The two are connected. Google's page on warnings and suspensions says repeated or severe violations can end in an account suspension, so a pile of product disapprovals with the same reason is worth fixing at its source, not item by item. Usually that source is a theme template, an app, or the process that builds your product data.

Where to look: product issues sit under Products, on the Needs attention tab; account issues show in a banner at the top of Merchant Center and under View setup and policy issues. For what to do next with each, see first steps after a Merchant Center notice.

The free scan covers the store side of both: it flags a basket price that differs from the product page, product markup whose price or availability disagrees with the page, and placeholder text on product pages. It does not see your Merchant Center account, so the notice itself is yours to read. See every check on the misrepresentation checker.

Typical evidence

Two settings on one dial — not two unrelated events

A product disapproval concerns individual listings while a suspension is an account-level status. StoreVerifier can show storefront conflicts, but it cannot infer why an account received either notice.

What it looks like once it is right

The merchant downloads the affected list, sees one reason on every row, traces it to the rounding app, fixes the app setting, and checks the product page, basket and product data agree for a sample of items.

Common mistakes

Common mistake

Forty products are disapproved for a price mismatch. The merchant edits the prices of the first ten by hand in Merchant Center and moves on, while the app that rounds prices on the product pages keeps producing the same mismatch on the rest.

Questions merchants ask

What is the difference between a disapproval and a suspension in Google Merchant Center?

A disapproval is product-level: Google's Issues page says it affects individual products, not your entire account, and a disapproved product stops showing across Google. A suspension is account-level and affects every product in the account.

Can product disapprovals turn into an account suspension?

They can add up. Google's page on warnings and suspensions says repeated or severe violations can end in an account suspension. Fix a repeated reason at its source, not product by product.

What is a preemptive item disapproval?

Google's Issues page says it occurs when the price or availability of your products does not match between your product data and your landing pages. A review is required to clear it, so make the page, the basket and the product data agree first.

Remediation

Risk signal

Treating an account issue like a product issue costs you the warning period; treating forty product issues as forty separate problems costs you a week. Read which kind you have, then fix at the source.
